The UAE government has officially announced updated UAE school hours for the 2026 academic year, following a historic shift in the nationwide Friday prayer time. Effective from January 9, 2026, public and private schools will adjust their Friday sessions to ensure students and staff can attend congregational prayers, which are now unified at 12:45 PM across all emirates. This strategic adjustment aims to balance academic requirements with religious and family commitments, prioritizing student well-being during the “Year of the Family.”
Breakdown of New Public School Timings
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has provided a detailed structure for UAE school hours on Fridays to manage transport and classroom logistics effectively:
- Kindergarten (KG): Classes will run from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
- Cycle 1 (Primary): Schools can choose staggered tracks, either 7:10 AM to 10:30 AM or 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
- Cycles 2 & 3 (Intermediate/Secondary): * Boys: 7:10 AM to 10:30 AM.
- Girls: 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
Impact on Private Schools (KHDA & ADEK)
While public schools follow the MoE mandate, private education authorities like Dubai’s KHDA and Abu Dhabi’s ADEK have also instructed schools to end classes no later than 11:30 AM on Fridays. Many private schools have already shifted their UAE school hours by 30 minutes to accommodate this change, ensuring a smooth transition for parents and bus operators.
Why the Change Was Needed
The adjustment follows the decision by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat to standardize Friday sermons and prayers at 12:45 PM. By ending UAE school hours earlier, the government ensures that the “double rush”—school pick-up and mosque-bound traffic—is managed better. This alignment fosters a healthier rhythm for family engagement, allowing more time for the traditional Friday lunch and community participation.
Benefits for Students and Staff
Educational experts highlight that the revised UAE school hours will reduce fatigue among students. Staggered dismissal times for different cycles also help in reducing traffic congestion around school zones. For teachers and school staff, this earlier finish provides a better work-life balance, allowing them to fulfill their religious duties without rushing from the classroom.
Future Outlook and Community Harmony
The Ministry has emphasized that Friday remains a full instructional day, and the quality of learning will not be compromised. Schools are encouraged to integrate flexible learning models, including online options for older students (Grade 6 and above) where applicable. As the UAE continues to harmonize modern administrative systems with cultural values, these updated UAE school hours stand as a testament to the nation’s commitment to its people’s spiritual and educational needs.
