In a decisive move toward a greener urban future, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially taken delivery of its newest electric bus fleet. Announced on January 18, 2026, this first batch of 250 vehicles is part of a massive 735-bus procurement contract designed to modernize the city’s transit infrastructure. Notably, the delivery includes 40 all-electric Zhongtong buses, marking the largest deployment of its kind in the UAE. This initiative directly supports the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the emirate’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Technical Prowess: Built for the Gulf Climate

These aren’t standard off-the-shelf vehicles; the new electric buses have been “tailor-made” for the specific climatic conditions of the Middle East. After three months of rigorous testing in Dubai’s heat, the propulsion and cooling systems achieved a 95% satisfaction rate.

  • Range: Up to 280 km on a single charge—enough to cover a full day’s service without returning to the depot.
  • Battery Power: Equipped with a 434 kWh battery.
  • Fast Charging: Supported by advanced ABB 360 kW chargers, ensuring rapid turnaround times.
  • Capacity: Each 12-meter bus can comfortably accommodate up to 70 passengers.

Smart Tech: Safety and Passenger Experience

Beyond being eco-friendly, this electric bus fleet is packed with “smart” features that align with Dubai’s status as a leading global hub for innovation:

  1. Raqeeb System: A Driver Behavior Monitoring system that uses AI to track fatigue and improve road safety.
  2. Automated Passenger Counting (APC): Records actual ridership data in real-time to optimize routes and prevent fare evasion.
  3. Connectivity: High-speed Wi-Fi and mobile charging points are available at every seat.
  4. Inclusivity: A low-floor design ensures seamless access for People of Determination, with dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles.

The Bigger Picture: Zero-Emission Strategy 2050

The arrival of these 40 electric units is only the beginning. The wider 735-bus contract also includes 400 MAN city buses and 76 double-decker Volvo buses, all of which meet the strict Euro 6 low-carbon standards.

According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, this rollout is a core pillar of the Zero-Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050. The ultimate goal is to convert 100% of Dubai’s public buses, taxis, and limousines to electric or hydrogen power by 2050, effectively decoupling the city’s growth from its carbon footprint.

Future Outlook for Commuters

As these buses enter service on urban and inter-urban routes this month, residents can expect a quieter, smoother, and more technologically advanced ride. With the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 projecting a population surge, the expansion of a sustainable electric bus fleet ensures that the city’s mobility remains efficient without compromising environmental health.
